Actinides & Lanthanides

Is a series of radioactive metallic elements

  • The actinide series is much different. They are all radioactive and some are not found in nature. Some of the elements with higher atomic numbers have only been made in labs.

  • Actinide series have multiple crystalline structures

  • These elements all have a high diversity in oxidation numbers and all are radioactive. All are radioactive due to instability.

  • Uranium is used as nuclear fuel

  • While Thorium is used in electronic devices

Also known as rare-earth metals, and some say inner-transition elements.

  • Actinides are typical metals and have properties of both the d-block and the f-block elements, but they are also radioactive

  • When exposed to air, they react with oxygen to form an oxide coating that tarnishes the surface.

  • Like most metals, the lanthanides have a bright silvery appearance. Five of the elements (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, and europium) are very reactive.

  • Lanthanides are used in lamps, lasers, magnets, phosphors, motion picture projectors, and X-ray intensifying screens.
